My Entrepreneurship Story


My entrepreneurship story probably started off a little different than most peoples. I was offered an opportunity to open up a Pak & Mail store from scratch. The gentleman who was actually opening the store had made me an offer to open and operate his store for him in Destin Fl. Actually accepting this position cut my income in half, but I was intrigued with the opportunity to build something from nothing. I opened the doors on Black Monday in 1987. It was slow at first but I decided I would go out into the community and let them know I was there and not just wait on them to find me. I worked extremely hard to build this business as if it were my own. As fate would have it, I was offered a chance to purchase the business. So six months after opening as the manager I was now the sole proprietor of Pak & Mail.  I added many new services to an already hefty line of services. I added a contract post office to our location which in itself completely paid for the monthly rent. Our business exploded and I was beginning to get offers on purchasing my business. I held off for many years before I gave Mailboxes Etc a ridiculous price. They are now known as UPS stores. To my surprise they said yes. The next day they showed up with a $10,000.00 earnest money check and ten days later I was sitting in my attorney’s office signing the sale papers.  The key to selling my business at such a large profit was selling it when it wasn’t for sale. Not being for sale let me set the selling price at a point to where I didn’t care if they bought it or not. I have had several small businesses since then. It is just something that gets into your blood and you can’t get over it.

I enrolled in ENT3003 because I wanted to learn from others who have had experience in starting and running their own businesses.

  1. What an amazing story! Who knew your business would one day turn into UPS. That is a true entrepreneur story. I like that you expanded services to meet what customer’s wanted and that it ultimately paid for itself. It’s amazing you were in a situation that allowed you to buy the store and expand those services. Looks like you are definitely already ahead of the game in entrepreneurship.

    1. It didn't turn into UPS it was bought out by UPS and all stores were named UPS stores. I wish it turned into UPS. I would be living on a tropical island somewhere where I would be surfing everyday. Thanks for commenting on my story. Have a blessed day.
